Thank you to all who attended the Tree Ordinance Workshop!
Between 2010 and 2015, Allegheny County lost more than 10,000 acres of tree canopy. CONNECT communities, which account for 19% of the County's land area, accounted for 33% of this canopy loss. Trees provide tremendous community benefits, including natural stormwater management, reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere; stabilizing hillsides with landslide prevention; increasing property values; and increasing the quality of life for residents.
On September 25th, 13 municipalities (including municipal managers, elected officials, and shade tree commission members) and several watershed and environmental organizations joined us for a Workshop with experts from Tree Pittsburgh and the Allegheny Land Trust to learn how their community can take steps to protect and maintain their tree canopy. Attendees reviewed best practices, model ordinances, and discovered other ways communities are encouraging their residents to help to preserve and maintain this vital community resource.
