Twentieth Century Club

On Friday, June 18, 2010, CONNECT held the Second Annual Congress of Neighboring Communities at the Twentieth Century Club in Oakland. Thanks to the dedication of the CONNECT members, representatives, staff, and graduate student interns, the event was a great success.

Over 90 attendees participated in the Congress, including CONNECT municipality representatives, representatives of local government related organizations, members of the local media, and other interested constituents.

The Congress was led by Innovation Clinic Director Dr. David Miller and CONNECT Chair Mayor Luke Ravenstahl. Congress attendees were treated to lunch during which Mayor Ravenstahl welcomed attendees to the Congress, Dr. Miller gave an overview on the work of CONNECT, CONNECT Associate Director Kathy Risko outlined the accomplishments of the past year, CONNECT graduate student intern Jay Rickabaugh presented CONNECT statistics, and President of Edgewood Council Pat Schaefer discussed CONNECTs strategic planning session and steps moving forward.

Allegheny County Deputy Manager Kathleen McKenzie also read a proclamation from County Executive Dan Onorato proclaiming Friday, June 18, CONNECT day in Allegheny County.

After lunch, attendees moved upstairs to the working session where the 17 proposed resolutions were brought before the Congress for consideration and voted on. Resolutions addressed organizational issues, COG participation, emergency medical services (EMS), energy savings opportunities, public transit and water/sewer issues. All 17 resolutions, and an additional resolution that was proposed at the Congress were passed.

The resolutions that were adopted will assist the re-elected officers of CONNECT Chair Luke Ravenstahl, Mayor City of Pittsburgh; Vice Chair Patricia Schaefer, President of Edgewood Council; Second Vice Chair Dan DeMarco, Commissioner of Ross Township; and Secretary/Treasurer Marcia Taylor, Assistant Manager of Mount Lebanon to guide the work of CONNECT for the next year.
